5 Curious Questions

Sparking Meaningful Connection with Older Adults

Originally printed in the Greet Ridgefield Magazine March 2026.

If I could invite you into my mind for a moment, you’d hear the countless stories I’ve gathered from older adults over the years—stories layered with wisdom, humor, hardship, and heart. A simple cup of coffee with an elder has often led to conversations I carry with me long after the mug is empty.

This spring, try asking the older adults in your life one—or all—of these five curious questions. Each is designed to deepen connection, spark reflection, and help you see the world through their eyes.

What is life like at your age?

This open-ended question can go in many directions. You might hear about daily routines, unexpected challenges, or comparisons to decades past. It invites authentic sharing and gives you a meaningful glimpse into what life feels like for them right now.

What has been the most meaningful chapter of your life?

This opens a window into their values. You will learn what they are most proud of, what they cherished, and which experiences shaped them. It’s a beautiful way to honor their story.

What did you learn from your parents about aging or getting older?

Their answer provides insight into the beliefs and expectations absorbed from a previous generation. If you’re an adult child, you can gain illumination into what your parent considers “normal” aging and what they may fear or embrace.

What is one thing your kids or grandkids do that you admire?

This question taps straight into love. Even with a short answer, older adults will naturally drift into a story-reavealing what they value, what they notice and how they see their family.

What does thriving look like to you in the next 5 years?

This future focused question helps you understand their hopes, whether simple or ambitious, and gives you insight into how to support their goals, wellbeing and sense of independence.

Curiosity breeds connection.

Whether you have five minutes or an hour, sit down with an elder this spring to connect. Ask, listen and let yourself be inspired by their experiences, their lessons, and their dreams. Their wisdom is a gift we shouldn’t miss.
